Traditional Arts

Maine tradtional arts have a rich and compelling history. Native American arts like basket making, canoe building, and wood/stone carving are still among the most visible. Other practices were brought to the land by settlers and explorers. These include work in iron, wood, fiber, clay, paper, glass, and more. The Franco community has made important contributions to Maine craft and continues to enhance the cultural diversity of the state.
